Artist Exploration and Analysis
Artist: Jean Michel Basquiat
Born: (Year and location) December 22, 1960 - Brooklyn, New York
Died (Year and location ) August 12, 1988 - New York, New York, USA
What type of artist: (I.e. painter, sculptor, photographer etc.)
Jean-Michel Basquiat emerged from the "Punk" scene in New York as a gritty, street-smart graffiti artist who successfully crossed over from his "downtown" origins to the international art gallery circuit. In a few fast-paced years, Basquiat swiftly rose to become one of the most celebrated, and possibly most commercially exploited American "naif" painters of the widely celebrated Neo-Expressionism art movement.
Art Period(s): Neo-Expressionism
What stands out as the most important facts about the artist?
1. Basquiat's work is one of the few examples of how an early 1980s American Punk, or graffiti-based and counter-cultural practice could become a fully recognized, critically embraced and popularly celebrated artistic phenomenon, indeed not unlike the rise of American Hip Hop during the same era.
2. Despite his work's "unstudied" appearance, Basquiat very skillfully and purposefully brought together in his art a host of disparate traditions, practices, and styles to create a unique kind of visual collage, one deriving, in part, from his urban origins, and in another a more distant, African-Caribbean heritage.
3. Basquiat's work is an example of how American artists of the 1980s could reintroduce the human figure in their work after the wide success of Minimalism and Conceptualism, thus establishing a dialogue with the more distant tradition of 1950s Abstract Expressionism.
What are some of this artist's most well known works?
1. SAMO Grafitti (1980)
2. Grand Maitre of the Outsider (1947)
3. Untitled (1982)
What makes this person's art great?
Jean Basquiat is great artist because he innovated what art is.
Why did you choose this artist?
I chose this artist because when I looked at his painting I saw that there was a lot of references African culture and the more that I looked at his paintings the more I became intrigued. As I was going through his art I wanted to learn more about
his history. I was sad to find out about his sudden death because he was revolutionizing the art industry. I have never been so interested in an artist before, maybe because of his tragic story or his amazing art.

The work of art I am critiquing is called Untitled (1982)
The artist's name is Jean Michel Basquiat
This is what I see when I look at the artwork.
When I look at this graffiti the first thing I notice is the use of african symbols, boldy appropriating images commonly associated with African art - a skull, a bone, an arrow.
All art is made using a variety of art elements: line, shape, color, texture and space. The one or two elements that stand out in this piece of work are:
In his paintings here is no straight line and I think that this is a metaphor that art isn't perfectly symmetrical. Also in this painting the colors contrast each other so it pops out at the viewer. I also now that he also uses characteristics from African descent.
Artists create a mood with their work. Sometimes the mood is happy, sometimes sad, sometimes angry. Sometimes, the art makes the viewer feel alone. The mood for this artwork is...
The mood that his painting shows can range from anger to corruption. From the dark tones that signify dispare and emptiness to the white contrast that helps certain things catch your eye. When I see this painting, it reminds me of a child trying to tell a grown up to notice him.
Artists try to communicate or send messages with their art work. What message do you think the artist was trying to send with this work?
I think that the message of this painting is that art has no boundaries and art can be whatever you wan it to be. I also see that one should embrace your culture because he used a lot of symbolism from african decent. The finally thing I noticed is that anything can be art and you have to ask yourself "If you could have done that, then why didn't you."
I like this artwork because
I like this artwork because it gave me a new outlook on art. The more I look at his artwork the more I want to look at other graffiti. The final thing is that I wish that Jean didn't overdose on drugs so he could continue to make amazing art.
